Labor and Employment Attorney

Chris is a partner on the Labor and Employment Practice Team. He defends employers nationwide in federal and state courts under the many statutes that govern the employment relationship, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).  Chris has experience managing complex class and collective action litigation, administrative actions, and appellate proceedings.  He further prosecutes and defends non-compete, non-solicitation, and trade secrets cases. 

Chris serves as go-to outside employment counsel for businesses by providing pragmatic advice and counsel on day-to-day human resources legal issues with a view toward achieving client business objectives and removing red tape, drafting employment-related agreements, policies and procedures, and  performing due diligence and transaction agreement review for mergers and acquisitions.

Chris has unique experience serving as senior counsel to a large, publicly-traded company where he provided legal consultation to C-suite and senior leaders across all business areas and affiliated companies and supported new business initiatives across the United States and Canada. He served as the primary drafter of executive employment agreements, offer letters, compensation plans, handbooks, equity-related documents, training, and similar legal documents.

Chris also is a rising thought leader in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) and its intersection with labor and employment legal issues. He provides advice on using AI-based recruiting and screening tools and employee performance management systems and has been involved in legislative efforts related to the regulation of AI in human resources.

In addition to his law degree, Chris is a current candidate for a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Wayne State University Law School.

Intellectual Property Attorney

Chelsea is a member of Varnum’s Intellectual Property Team. She has a wide range of experience in patent prosecution, trademark and copyright protection, trade secret law and preparation and review of IP agreements. She has prepared and prosecuted numerous domestic and foreign patent applications within the biological, chemical and mechanical arts. She regularly prepares prior art searches, freedom-to-operate analyses and infringement and invalidity opinions.

Chelsea is also experienced in IP litigation involving patent and trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation and unfair competition.

During law school, Chelsea served an extensive, 10-week externship with the USPTO’s Patent Experience Extern Program and Patent Training Academy at the Elijah J. McCoy Midwest Regional U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She worked alongside patent examiners in a unit that oversees various biotech, chemical and pharmaceutical technologies to review patent applications for grant consideration and conducted prior art searches. She also delivered presentations on patent and trademark matters to small business owners and aspiring inventors at USPTO informational events.

He has extensive experience representing private equity firms, family offices, management groups, strategic investors and shareholders in mergers, acquisitions and divestitures of assets and equity. Greg also works closely with subsidiaries of foreign-owned companies to help them establish and grow businesses in the United States.

Tax Attorney

Tom is a member of the Tax Practice Team. His practice includes civil and criminal tax litigation. Previously employed by the Department of Attorney General, Tom acted as legal counsel to the Department of Treasury in litigation matters before the Michigan Tax Tribunal, Court of Claims, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. Prior to his employment with the Michigan Attorney General, he was an assistant prosecuting attorney in Detroit and handled criminal litigation and appeals.

Tom’s tax practice focuses on the representation of Fortune 1000 companies in State and Local Tax (SALT) litigation, which includes sales, use, corporate income, motor fuel, tobacco, real and personal property and Michigan Business Tax matters. Maureen is a partner and leads Varnum’s Labor and Employment Practice Team. She represents clients in all areas of labor and employment. She advises clients on labor management relations including union election proceedings, collective bargaining and contract enforcement in arbitration and before the National Labor Relations Board. Maureen defends employment-related claims including discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful discharge, Whistleblowers’ and Fair Labor Standards Act violations in federal and state courts, administrative proceedings and arbitration hearings. She counsels clients on drafting, implementation and enforcement of workplace policies. She has significant experience working with companies in a variety of industries including manufacturing, automotive, logistics and health care.

Representation of the borrower in a $45,000,000 revolving credit facility, in addition to general representation of such borrower in all relevant financial matters including pursuit and closing of a Main Street Loan and leasehold improvement financing with other lending institutions.

Immigration Attorney

Nina focuses her practice on business and family-based immigration matters. Her experience encompasses all nonimmigrant visa petitions including H-1B, E, L-1A, L-1B, TN under the USMCA (formerly NAFTA) treaty and O-1 visas. She also assists clients with employment-based permanent residence petitions including the EB-2/EB-3 labor certifications process, EB-1 extraordinary ability, EB-1 outstanding professor and researchers and EB-1 multinational managers and executives petitions; family-based permanent residence applications; naturalization applications; and foreign visa issues.
