Varnum Welcomes Justice Bolden in Celebration of Women’s History Month

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Varnum proudly welcomed Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden for a captivating discussion on her journey into the legal field, overcoming adversities as a Black woman.

Justice Bolden shared her personal narrative, shedding light on the pivotal moments that shaped her path, including the tragic lynching of her great-grandfather in 1939 which ignited her passion for justice and equality. From her early career as a criminal defense attorney to her tenure in the Michigan House, she candidly recounted her remarkable journey to the Michigan Supreme Court, balancing motherhood with a demanding career as a pregnant women and mother on the campaign trail.

Addressing prevalent challenges, Justice Bolden highlighted the pressure for women to exceed every qualification before pursuing opportunities. She also discussed the impact of age, gender, race, and motherhood on societal perceptions of a candidate’s capabilities, advocating for greater inclusivity and representation in the legal profession.

Varnum attorney Jailah Emerson was instrumental in arranging Justice Bolden’s appearance at the firm.

As a new Black female attorney, her story reaffirms my belief in the limitless possibilities ahead and the significance of our voices in shaping a more diverse legal community.”

Justice Bolden’s visit to Varnum served as an inspiring testament to resilience and determination, inspiring individuals to pursue their aspirations and break down barriers.
