Varnum Represents Credit Union in Strategic Merger

West Michigan Credit Union, a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based credit union, received final regulatory approvals from the State of Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services and the National Credit Union Administration in connection with its merger with Western Districts Members Credit Union.

With the completion of the merger, West Michigan Credit Union’s asset size grows to over $265 million and seven branch locations. The merger also results in the expansion of West Michigan Credit Union’s field of membership, allowing its services to be accessible to a greater population across Michigan including the counties of Allegan, Barry, Benzie, Clare, Calhoun, Eaton, Grand Traverse, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kalkaska, Mason, Muskegon, Oceana and Ottawa, in addition to the counties it already serves.

Varnum partner Steven Buquicchio served as counsel to West Michigan Credit Union from the merger planning and application process through final approval and completion. 

Buquicchio serves as outside general counsel to credit union clients in a variety of representations including mergers and bank acquisitions, contract review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, contract disputes, regulatory actions and approvals, due diligence, CUSO creation and development, operational matters, strategic planning, field of membership expansion, litigation, claim and delivery, commercial workouts, collections and recoveries.
