Herman Hofman Named Up and Coming Lawyer by Michigan Lawyers Weekly

February 23, 2023

Varnum attorney Herman Hofman has been named to the 2023 Class of Up and Coming Lawyers by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Up and Coming Lawyers are recognized for their accomplishments in the legal profession and the community within their first ten years of practice.

Hofman is a member of Varnum’s Litigation and ADR Practice Team. He is experienced litigating for and advising clients in a wide variety of industries in legal matters in both individual and class action contexts. He has also successfully handled appeals spanning a broad range of subject matters in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth and Seventh Circuits, the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Hofman joined Varnum in October 2017 and was elected to the partnership in January this year. Over the past five years, he has litigated matters in state and federal courts across the country at all stages, from pre-litigation negotiations to appeals, independently managing clients through these disputes.

Hofman has been named by Best Lawyers® as one of the “Ones to Watch,” a designation given to attorneys who are earlier in their careers in recognition of their outstanding professional excellence in private practice.

A native of West Michigan, Hofman spent his youth living in a rural village in Bolivia, South America, where his Dutch immigrant parents served as missionaries. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Dordt University, where he was the recipient of two merit-based scholarships as well as an athletic scholarship, he attended Michigan State University College of Law on a full tuition scholarship.

Following graduation from law school, Hofman served the 2016 term as a law clerk for then-Chief Judge Robert J. Jonker in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan. During that time, he won top honors in the 2016 National Religious Liberty Student Writing Competition sponsored by the J. Reuben Clark Law Society and the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University.

Michigan Lawyers Weekly will honor the Class of 2023 Up and Coming Lawyers at a recognition luncheon event in April. Hofman and other members of the class will be profiled in an upcoming edition of Michigan Lawyers Weekly. More information about the award can be found here.
