Family Law Attorney

Matthew is a partner on Varnum’s Family Law Practice Team and an experienced attorney known for his collaborative, client-centered approach to sensitive and contested family matters. He counsels clients in divorce, child custody, parenting time disputes, asset division, and financial support matters, with a strength in facilitating amicable resolutions that reduce the need for litigation. Many of his most significant cases are referred to him for his ability to navigate high-stakes family disputes with sound judgment and practical insight.

Matthew’s approach is professional, personable, and measured, with a focus on resolving matters through negotiated solutions whenever possible. When negotiation is not feasible, he draws on his experience in trial court to advocate decisively on behalf of his clients.

While earning his law degree, Matthew served as an extern for the Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Stephen Borrello at the Michigan Court of Appeals. He then began practicing law at his family’s firm in Okemos, Michigan before relocating to West Michigan.
