In recognition of Black History Month, Varnum will provide a series of internal events and activities that commemorate and reflect on achievements of African Americans throughout history. In addition, the firm’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee has partnered with several Black-owned businesses to promote and celebrate business achievements in our local communities.
“During Black History Month, we honor the voices of the Civil Rights Movement and of racial equality as we celebrate the rich, vast, and notable culture of African Americans,” said Luis Avila, partner and Chair of the firm’s DEI Committee. “We’re also encouraging all firm members to learn more about the African American business community by trying some of the great products offered by Black-owned businesses.”
Throughout the month, the firm will share books, articles and podcasts that celebrate the achievements of African Americans and spotlight contributions of the Black community. Key aspects of the firm’s programming will include a firm-wide book discussion featuring “Caste: The Origin of our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson and weekly recognition of Black-owned businesses, with their products being distributed to all members of the firm.
“Each year, we see wider participation and more engagement in our awareness activities and programs,” Avila said. “It is gratifying to know members of the firm recognize the importance of a culture that values and welcomes diversity.”
