Varnum is pleased to announce that Edward R. Post has joined the firm, upon his retirement as Chief Judge of the 20th Circuit Court in Ottawa County. Post’s law practice will focus on facilitative mediation, arbitration and litigation consulting.
Post’s long career on the bench includes 24 years at the Circuit Court and two years at the 58th District Court. During his career, he presided over more than 40,000 cases including more than 250 jury trials. His case load included both criminal and civil matters, and he handled family law cases for many years until the formation of the circuit court’s family division.
“While I am proud of my accomplishments on the bench, I am looking forward to the next phase of my career in private practice,” said Post. “Helping people resolve legal disputes has been one of the most gratifying aspects of my judicial career, and I look forward to continuing that practice through facilitative mediation. It is one of the most expedient and economical ways of handling civil disputes.”
Post said Varnum was a natural choice for this next phase of his career.
“In addition to having some familiarity and friendships with Varnum attorneys, I chose Varnum because of the firm’s broad range of legal service offerings and sophisticated practices,” Post said. “To have those resources at my fingertips will be very beneficial to my practice and my clients.”
Post is a graduate of Calvin College and the University of Detroit Mercy Law School. Prior to his career on the bench, he was a litigator in private practice. In addition to his legal career, he served three years as a general manager for a West Michigan office furniture sales business and co-founded a highly successful startup office furniture manufacturing company. A long-time resident of the lakeshore area, Post has been active in numerous civic organizations over the years and was honored by United Way as an outstanding community volunteer. He received a prestigious Lifetime Achievement award from the Tri Cities Chamber of Commerce in 2016.
