Court Upholds Consent Judgment In Saugatuck Dunes Lawsuit, Substantive Settlement Terms Not Adopted
July 19, 2012After receiving a large number of written comments from third parties concerning the proposed settlement of the federal court litigation in Singapore Dunes LLC v. Township of Saugatuck, Chief Judge Maloney issued an opinion on June 11, 2012, granting the parties' Joint Motion for Entry of Consent Judgment. As described by the court, "the second proposed consent decree is itself a relatively simple document" that provides that the plaintiff's property "shall be subject to the regulations of the zoning districts in which they were placed before the adoption of the R-4 zoning" that was at issue in the lawsuit.

U.S. Supreme Court Clerk Visiting WDMI in October
July 17, 2012United States Supreme Court Clerk William Suter will attend the Western District of Michigan Federal Bar Association's annual meeting on October 17, 2012. During the meeting there will also be a swearing in for the United States Supreme Court Bar.

Michigan Campaign Finance Act Survives Appellate Challenge
July 12, 2012The Honorable Janet T. Neff, U.S. District Judge, denied Greg McNeilly's request for a preliminary injunction challenge to Michigan's campaign finance limits on individual contributions to candidates for state office in McNeilly v. Land, No. 10-2244 (July 3, 2012). Plaintiff McNeilly challenged the constitutionality of the individual contribution limits, filing an action against the then Michigan Secretary of State, Terri Lynn Land, in federal court.

Former Varnum Attorney Pat Miles Confirmed New U.S. Attorney
July 9, 2012Grand Rapids attorney Patrick Miles, Jr. is the new U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan. President Obama nominated Miles to the post at the end of March, and his nomination was recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
