Wind Turbine Noise Mitigation Required

November 8, 2013
Energy Blog Post

The Mason County Planning Commission has found that some of the turbines in Consumers Energy's Lake Winds Energy Park have violated the 45 decibel noise limit set out in the applicable special land permit. The sound consultant hired by the county to conduct the testing indicated that if an "instantaneous" sound standard was used, then four of the fifty six turbines violated the standard during the 10-minute test. However, he also indicated that if the ordinance was read to allow a 10-minute average for sound, there would be no violations.
