Varnum Welcomes Hofman to Grand Rapids Office

October 4, 2017

Varnum is pleased to announce that Herman D. Hofman has joined the firm. He is based in the firm’s Grand Rapids office.

Hofman is currently a member of the firm’s litigation and trial practice team, focusing on various types of complex commercial litigation, employment disputes and appeals. He formerly served as a clerk for Chief Judge Robert J. Jonker in the District Court for the Western District of Michigan, where he gained considerable experience researching and drafting proposed opinions and orders in – among other areas – employment law, complex commercial litigation, and government enforcement actions.

As a new associate, Hofman will be able to take advantage of Varnum’s “free agent” approach before deciding on a specific legal area of practice. Under the program, new associates practice in a variety of areas for about two years before deciding on an area of focus.

Hofman is a 2016 graduate of Michigan State University College of Law, attending on a full tuition academic scholarship and graduating 17th in a class of 267. He received his undergraduate degree from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Hofman formerly served as a legal intern at St. Vincent Catholic Charities Immigration Law Clinic in Lansing and as a clerk at the Gallagher Law Firm in East Lansing. He lived in a rural village in Bolivia, South America for nine years and is fluent in Spanish and Dutch, as well as English.
