Varnum Welcomes Employee Benefits And Tax Attorney Jeff DeVree

Jeffrey A. DeVree has joined Varnum LLP as a partner in the Grand Rapids office.

A veteran employee benefits and tax attorney, DeVree will spearhead Varnum's employee benefits group. "We're delighted to welcome an attorney of Jeff's caliber to our practice," said Larry Titley, a longtime leader in Varnum's employee benefits group. "He has more than 25 years' experience in benefits and tax matters, and his unique expertise adds to the value we offer our clients."

The employee benefits group at Varnum includes four partners, an associate, and one of the few paralegals in the state to be certified by the IRS as an Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent.

DeVree's experience includes pension and profit-sharing plans, employee stock ownership plans, health plans, executive compensation plans, tax-structured sales and leases, contested tax matters, and business succession plans. Most recently at Clark Hill, DeVree was at Mika Meyers Beckett and Jones for 22 years until 2007.

In addition to his legal practice, DeVree serves on the Tax Policy Committee of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the Tax and Regulatory Affairs Committee of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. Working with both of these organizations, DeVree is active in reviewing and developing proposals for Michigan tax reform. He is also a member emeritus of the IRS Great Lakes Area Tax-Exempt and Government Entities Council.

DeVree holds a B.A. in Economics from Hope College and received his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He is listed the Best Lawyers in America® and Super Lawyers, and received an IRS Commissioner's Award for work in developing examination procedures and publications for employee benefit plans.
