Varnum Presents ArtPrize 2-Dimensional Art Juried Award

October 2, 2012

The public has voted for their top ten pieces and the jurors have selected their short list of five in each category (2D art, 3D art, time/performance, urban space and outstanding venue).

Varnum is once again the sponsor of the 2D juried award. The five finalists were selected by critic Tyler Green, Editor of Modern Art Notes, columnist for Modern Painters, and producer of The Modern Art Notes Podcast. Varnum attorneys Dan Molhoek and Dirk Hoffius will once again present the award at the ceremony on Friday, Oct. 5 at The Loading Dock of the former Grand Rapids Press building. Dan and Dirk, along with ArtPrize Marketing Director Todd Herring, spent some time last week viewing the finalists for the award.

For the fourth year in a row, Varnum will be a major sponsor of ArtPrize, a 19-day first-of-its-kind open art competition based in Grand Rapids, Mich. Varnum will once again be the presenting sponsor of the 2-Dimensional Work Award, one of five professional juried awards presented to artists who best reflect their category.

Launched in 2010, the Juried Awards Program brings in renowned curators from the respective fields to judge five areas of art, which include 3-dimensional work, time-based work, urban space work, international work and 2-dimensional work. The 2-D Award will be juried by Washington-based art journalist Tyler Green. The winner selected by Green will receive a $20,000 cash award.

Green edits and writes Modern Art Notes and is the U.S. columnist for Modern Painters magazine. The Wall Street Journal said, "You won't find a better-informed art writer than Tyler Green." The Washington Post has named Green one of Washington's 14 young and influential cultural figures.

This year, in effort to better showcase the juried award finalists, each juror will share five "must see" ArtPrize entries that are in the final run for the juried awards on Monday, September 24 at the ArtPrize HUB in downtown Grand Rapids. The winner of the 2-Dimensional award will be announced by members of Varnum's Art Committee at the closing ceremony on Friday, October 5 in downtown Grand Rapids.

Varnum has been an active supporter of the local art community for decades and supports dozens of art organizations across the state each year. Varnum's five offices feature works by local and regional artists, some of which have been incorporated into the firm's website and marketing materials.
