Varnum Presents ArtPrize 2-D Art Juried Award
Varnum will present the 2011 ArtPrize 2-Dimensional Work Award, one of five professional juried awards presented to artists who best reflect their category.
The 2-D Award will be juried by Anne Ellegood, senior curator at the Hammer Museum of Los Angeles and presented by Varnum Managing Partner Larry Murphy. The Juried Awards Program was launched in 2010 and features an annual selection of judges who are experts in their respective fields. The 2-D artist selected by Ellegood will receive an award of $7,000.
Prior to joining the Hammer Museum, Ellegood was Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden in Washington DC. Previously, she was the New York-based curator for Peter Norton’s collection of more than 2,400 works of international contemporary art. From 1998-2003, she was the Associate Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.
"Varnum has been an active supporter of the local art community for decades, and we are pleased to welcome Ms. Ellegood to curate the 2-dimensional award," said Murphy. "The juried awards contribute to the ArtPrize conversation. The conversation continues as we're given a glimpse of the art through the eyes of an expert."
The other four juried award categories include 3-dimensional work, time-based work, urban space work and international work. All five awards will be presented at the closing ceremony on Thursday, October 6 at DeVos Performance Hall in downtown Grand Rapids.
