Varnum Kicks Off of Gilda's Laugh Fest with Opening Night Celebration

March 14, 2011

Varnum was the official sponsor of Gilda's Laugh Fest opening night reception that kicked off the ten-day festival at the B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids on March 10.

Gilda’s LaughFest is a festival of laughter and comedy organized by Gilda's Club Grand Rapids. The non-profit organization is an affiliate of Gilda's Club Worldwide, a free cancer support community of children, adults, families and friends started in honor of comedian Gilda Radner , who was an advocate for cancer support communities. The festival will feature a variety of free and ticketed comedy shows by comedians from across the country. Headlining comedians include Betty White and Bill Cosby.

The idea for Gilda's Laugh Fest began when the board started planning Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids' 10th birthday celebration. The theme "a festival of laughter" grew from the inspirational spirit of laughter, smiles and celebration of life that the club has cultivated over the past ten years.

"Once this idea for Laugh Fest took shape, Gilda's board members and Varnum attorneys Seth Ashby and Jim Eardley agreed Varnum's involvement seemed like a natural fit," said Carroll Velie, director of human resources at Varnum and co-chair of Gilda's Laugh Fest. "In addition to the firm's historical commitment to community involvement, attorneys and members of our staff have been involved with Gilda's Club Grand Rapids since its inception -- from filling board positions to organizing and preparing monthly meals for Gilda's members."

The opening party, which carried a light theme of jokes, MadLibs and friendly pokes at lawyers, featured standup comedy routines from Clean Comedy, interactive joke boards and a thank you from Varnum attorney Jim Eardley to fellow sponsors of the festival.
