Varnum Attorneys Discuss Electronic Privacy Laws In Grand Rapids Business Journal Article

The Senate Judiciary Committee recently met to discuss updates to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), specifically email communications. The ECPA, which was first passed in 1986 is severely outdated with regards to today's level of technology. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would strengthen privacy regarding email communications.

Varnum attorneys Ron Dewaard and Gary Mouw recently commented on the right to privacy laws that are at issue in a recent article in the Grand Rapids Business Journal.

"The principles of the Fourth Amendment that were previously applied are being challenged by the explosion in technology in both contexts, and the legislature and courts are going to have to determine where to draw the line," said Dewaard.
