Varnum Attorneys Coach City High Mock Trial Team
Varnum Attorneys Ray Littleton, April Sawhill, and Bryan Walters were volunteer coaches for Grand Rapids City High’s Mock Trial team this year. City High is Grand Rapids Public Schools’ magnet high school for gifted and talented students. City High had not fielded a mock trial team for several years, but approached Varnum about helping the school field a team this year.
The students worked extremely hard, working with Varnum attorneys for two months to prepare for the West Michigan Regional Tournament on March 7, 2009 at the Kent County Circuit Courthouse. The students had the opportunity to present a short case, complete with opening statements, direct and cross examinations, and closing statements to a jury of West Michigan judges and attorney volunteers. City High was undefeated during the two preliminary rounds of the tournament, but lost a close decision in the final round to Forest Hills Eastern (who ultimately finished in second place at the State Finals). City High finished in fourth place, a fantastic result for a group of students who had not done mock trial before, but one place away from advancing to the State Finals in Lansing.
