Varnum Attorney Joy Fossel Awarded 2010 Michael S. Barnes Award By Legal Aid of Western Michigan
October 28, 2010, Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Varnum attorney Joy Fossel was presented the prestigious Michael S. Barnes Award by Legal Aid of Western Michigan Thursday, October 28.
Legal Aid of Western Michigan provides free legal assistance to low-income persons and seniors in non-criminal and non-fee generating matters. The Michael S. Barnes award recognizes attorneys for exceptional dedication and relentless pursuit of justice for the underprivileged.
Fossel is a litigation and trial attorney with extensive experience dealing with complex business and commercial litigation, employment claims, health care litigation, product liability and contested probate matters.
Outside of her practice, Fossel is active in the West Michigan community and has been involved in numerous nonprofit organizations and causes, including serving as a trustee or director on the boards of the West Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Grand Rapids Ballet, the Kent County AIDS Foundation and the Grand Rapids AIDS Resource Center, and Silent Observer. Fossel also serves as an adjunct professor for pretrial skills at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and has played an active role in the Odyssey of the Mind program.
Fossel is also a member of the Michigan State Medical Society Speaker's Bureau and speaks frequently on sophisticated topics such as AIDS discrimination and testing and Michigan civil procedure during trial, and jury selection.
