Three Varnum Lawyers Listed Among Seven Preeminent Plaintiffs' Attorneys in Michigan

May 24, 2012

Varnum attorneys Ronald DeWaard, Steve Afendoulis and Peter Smit have been named leading Plaintiff's stars in Michigan by national ranking guide Benchmark: Plaintiffs. Only seven attorneys in Michigan qualified for the honor.

Benchmark's Plaintiff Stars are identified as the result of a six-month research process. The research includes extensive interviews with litigators and their clients, and the examination of recent casework handled by the firm. In its first year of publication, Benchmark: Plaintiffs is the only guide dedicated to the comprehensive analysis of the U.S. Plaintiffs Bar.

DeWaard is a member of Varnum's litigation and trial group, and has accumulated a vast amount of first chair trial experience across the country. He served as federal prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice in Miami for seven years before returning to Varnum. DeWaard has tried civil cases in courts across the United States and regularly handles complex commercial, corporate tax, patent, environmental, labor, and general liability cases for defendants and plaintiffs.

Steve Afendoulis has served as a trial and appellate advocate at Varnum for  nearly 30 years. He focuses his practice in the areas of complex commercial; partnership, shareholder and LLC disputes; personal injury; real estate; and trademark and unfair competition. Afendoulis is a Martindale-Hubbell Rating: AV® attorney and was named as a Local Litigation Star in Benchmark Litigation 2012.

Peter Smit represents clients in litigation cases in a variety of situations including personal injury/wrongful death, auto, trucking, commercial/business, employment, and product liability. Smit is certified in Alternative Dispute Resolution for practice in the U.S. District Court for Western District of Michigan and in Michigan circuit courts.
