Skaggs Joins Legal Assistance Center Board of Trustees
Varnum labor and employment attorney Elizabeth Wells Skaggs was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Legal Assistance Center, a community supported nonprofit legal self-help center.
The Legal Assistance Center offers assistance in family law, housing, and money issues, and disputes, probate and small claims matters in Kent County. Most of the help offered is free or low cost. The center is supported by Kent County, the Grand Rapids Bar Association, the Access to Justice Fund (which is administered by the Michigan State Bar Foundation), and local lawyers, law firms, and corporations.
Although the center does not give legal advice or provide representation, it provides legal information, forms, guidance and resources to help those unfamiliar with the court system solve legal problems and use the courts.
Skaggs is a partner in the labor and employment practice group at Varnum, focusing on employment issues and litigation. She has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® for the past five years and was recognized by that organization as "Lawyer of the Year" for Labor and Employment Litigation in 2014. She is listed in Super Lawyers and was named to the Class of 2014 "Women in the Law" by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.
In addition to the Legal Assistance Center board, Skaggs is a member and former chair of the board for ACT – Artists Creating Together. She recently served on the Executive Leadership Team of the Go Red for Women Campaign of the American Heart Association – Midwest Affiliate, and is a current member of the Judicial Review Committee for the Grand Rapids Bar Association.
