Scarbrough Joins Varnum as Executive Director
William P. Scarbrough has joined Varnum LLP as executive director. Scarbrough will lead the firm’s administrative staff and work closely with the firm’s Policy and Executive committees.
Scarbrough has 30 years of law firm administrative experience, including operating officer responsibilities at a variety of local and national law firms. He joins Varnum from Detroit-based Bodman PLC, where he served as chief operating officer for the past five years. He previously served as COO for Baker McKenzie LLP in Washington and New York, as well as Grand Rapids-based Smith Haughey. He also served as CIO with Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago and was chief administrator of their London office.
In addition to operations management, Scarbrough is experienced in lateral hiring, attorney onboarding and all aspects of planning, design and execution in opening new offices.
“Bill brings deep insight into our Michigan as well as the national legal market,” said Varnum Chair Dave Khorey. “His understanding and appreciation of the Varnum culture, combined with his wide-ranging prior experience, make him uniquely qualified to lead our firm’s various strategic projects.”
Scarbrough holds Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan. Within the community, he has been active on the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre board for many years, including current service on the Endowment Committee. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for Matrix Human Services in Detroit, and is a co-editor of Practice Innovations, a legal trade newsletter published by Thomson Reuters.
