Nemeth Named 2015 Leader In the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly
Varnum attorney Eric Nemeth has been named one of the 2015 "Leaders in the Law" by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. A successful tax attorney, Nemeth has continually demonstrated his commitment to the legal profession while also using his expertise to assist families of lesser means and to mentor and encourage students interested in pursuing a legal education. He will be honored for his unique achievements on March 26th at a ceremony at the Detroit Marriott Troy.
Honorees were selected by a distinguished panel using specific criteria including success in the legal profession, demonstrated enthusiasm on behalf of clients, strength of character and leadership in the community, and respect among peers.
Nemeth graduated cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law, where he has since been one of the founding members of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. He taught as an adjunct professor during the launch of the program which has helped thousands of people of modest means address federal and state tax issues over the past decade. The clinic now receives funds from the IRS and has been used as a model for other clinics in Michigan.
After receiving his L.L.M. in taxation from Wayne State University, Nemeth went to work with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel as a Senior Trial Attorney. He then served as a United States Army Judge Advocate for the Army Reserve, concentrating his efforts on assisting children and dependents of those being deployed, and establishing a legal check-up process for all soldiers in his brigade on an annual basis. He was recognized for these contributions with an Army Excellence Award.
In addition to authoring and co-authoring a number of articles on tax law, serving as a speaker at tax seminars and spearheading Varnum's annual Institute for Tax Preparers, Nemeth has been the recipient of numerous awards over the course of his career. He has been listed in Michigan Super Lawyers since 2010, named in the Michigan Super Lawyers Top 100 in 2012, and has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America in the category of Litigation & Controversy – Tax since 2012.
Nemeth is co-chair of the University of Michigan Dearborn Campus Capital Campaign and has endowed three scholarships for students in various fields of study, based on financial needs. He has served as the Chairman of the Board for Holy Redeemer Schools in Southwest Detroit (his alma mater) where he has continued to encourage economically-disadvantaged students to stay on the college track and to focus on their career goals and aspirations.
