Matt Bower Named to MLW Leaders in the Law Class of 2020

February 25, 2020

Michigan Lawyers Weekly has named Varnum attorney Matt Bower to its Class of 2020 Leaders in the Law. Bower is a partner on the Business and Corporate Practice Team and serves as the lead attorney in the Varnum’s Ann Arbor office.

The annual recognition honors those who have made outstanding contributions in the practice of law in Michigan and set an example for other lawyers. Honorees have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in practicing law, are inspiring and accomplished leaders, and seek improvement to the legal community and their communities at large. Bower and other honorees will be recognized at a luncheon event in Troy on April 9.

Bower’s legal practice focuses on business transactions, intellectual property and venture financing, as well as corporate and intellectual property transactions. In addition, he works closely with venture capitalists, angel investors, and second-stage and private companies on day-to-day issues.

Bower also leads the firm’s Startup and Emerging Companies Practice Team. This service area has grown significantly under his leadership and  has made an impact on the venture capital and startup community across the state of Michigan. He has worked with more than 500 clients under the MiSpringboard program – which provides free legal services to qualified startups – as well as scores of other startup clients and entrepreneurial support organizations around the state.

In addition to his practice, Bower is a frequent lecturer on entrepreneurship, venture capital and corporate transactions, as well as copyright, trademark, internet, software and other areas of intellectual property law. He speaks to business incubators, economic development organizations, investor networks, and entrepreneurs at events and pitch competitions. In recent years, his advocacy for the development of a strong entrepreneur and investment community in Michigan has ranged from addressing student entrepreneurs at Houghton’s Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula to convening a group of venture capital leaders for a roundtable discussion on the state of venture capital in Michigan.

Bower was recognized for his entrepreneurial community contributions by being named to the Detroit Techweek 100, recognizing leaders of fast-growing tech companies, prominent investors and key enablers of the digital ecosystem. He has also been recognized by Super Lawyers since 2012.

Bower is committed to the Southeast Michigan community as well. In September 2016, he was selected for Leadership Detroit Class XXXVIII, a ten-month leadership program designed to challenge emerging and existing leaders from Southeast Michigan to bring about positive change. Since graduating from Leadership Detroit, Bower has been invited back to speak to subsequent Leadership Detroit Classes about entrepreneurship and, specifically, the challenges and opportunities of launching a company in Detroit.
