Koning Featured in Crain's Salute to Entrepreneurs

June 7, 2012

Varnum attorney Harvey Koning will featured at Crain's ninth annual Salute to Entrepreneurs event on June 26 at Detroit Golf Club, where Koning will represent Varnum's MiSpringboard program, now entering its second year.

Salute to Entrepreneurs honors companies that demonstrate growth and innovation. This year, the event focuses on moving from startups to second-stage businesses and will include a Michigan Economic Development Corporation panel to discuss how Pure Michigan Business Connect, a public-private initiative created to help Michigan companies grow, is providing Michigan companies new ways to raise capital, buy and sell, and connect with other members of the Michigan business community.

Koning, a business and finance attorney with more than 20 years of experience, will talk about Varnum's MiSpringboard program, the firm's commitment to donate $1 million in legal services to Michigan entrepreneurs and second-stage businesses in effort to grow the state's economy. Varnum has partnered with Pure Michigan Business Connect and economic development organizations to find promising entrepreneurs in need of legal counsel. Since Gov. Rick Snyder announced the launch of MiSpringboard in June 2011, the program has assisted 33 businesses in 23 cities across the state.

Other Salute to Entrepreneurs panelist include:

  • Janelle Arbuckle, economic gardening analyst, Economic Gardening Services
  • Tim Heyse, economic gardening staff assistant, Economic Gardening Support Services
  • Tom Rico, manager, Economic Gardening Support Services
  • Jacob Schroeder, senior program analyst, Business-to-Business Network
  • Nicole Whitehead, project manager, Second-Stage Economic Gardening Initiative

The keynote speaker is Manoj Bhargava, CEO of Living Essentials and creator of 5-Hour Energy, who will speak on "A Non-MBA Approach to Growing a Business."

The event is from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  For a full schedule of events or to register, visit Crain's Salute to Entrepreneurs or call 313-446-0300.
