Varnum attorney Luis Avila has been selected as one of Grand Rapids Business Journal’s 2018 “40 under 40” business leaders. It is his fourth time receiving this recognition.
There were 479 nominations submitted for consideration this year. The selection committee included Bob Thomas, chief operating officer, Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Lansing; Lou Glazer, president and co-founder of Michigan Future, Inc., Ann Arbor; and Jennifer Kluge, president and CEO, MichBusiness/Michigan Business & Professional Association, Warren.
Avila focuses his practice on labor, employment and immigration issues. He is experienced in traditional labor matters, including grievances, arbitrations, collective bargaining negotiations, union drives and matters in front of the National Labor Relations Board and the Michigan Employment Relations Commission. Avila counsels both public and private sector employees on numerous workplace matters such as disciplinary and dispute solution procedures, wage-hour matters, and harassment and litigation prevention.
In 2016 and 2017, Avila was deemed a Rising Star by Michigan Super Lawyers. He was also named to the Hot List by Lawyers of Color in 2014 and was honored by Wedgwood Christian Services as Diversity Champion in 2014.
Highly active in the community, Avila serves on the boards of several local organizations, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids Ballet Company, Grand Rapids Symphony and Wedgewood Christian Services. He also serves as the Board president for the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
