Best to Chair Detroit Bar Association’s Debtor-Creditor Rights Section

Varnum attorney Brendan Best has been named chair of the newly-formed Debtor-Creditor Rights Section of the Detroit Bar Association.

The new section will offer DBA members a chance to meet with practitioners in a mix of educational and social events. The section will focus various areas of insolvency-related areas of law, including:

  • debtor and creditor rights
  • bankruptcy
  • distressed finance
  • workouts
  • receiverships
  • assignments for the benefit of creditors

While the new section will get underway with activity in 2018, a formational and planning meeting is set for Thursday, Oct. 19 for those interested in serving on the board. The meeting will be held at Varnum’s Detroit office, 160 W. Fort Street. For details and to register, contact Best at [email protected].

Best is co-chair of Varnum’s Restructuring Group, with extensive experience representing creditors, debtors and other parties in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, out-of-court workouts, distressed restructuring transactions and general insolvencies. He has a national bankruptcy practice, serving clients in diverse industries including manufacturing, automotive, building supply and service, energy, oil and gas, health care, food service, gaming, hospitality, construction and real estate.

Best is a graduate of Wayne State University Law School and The George Washington University. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Detroit Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association. He has been a presenter and panelist at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Eastern District Chapter 11 Roundtable for the past three years.

The Detroit Bar legal sections are intended to provide members an opportunity to attain peer recognition as leaders in their practice specialty, through opportunities to host informational meetings, events, author articles, network, and otherwise increase their visibility. They also provide valuable opportunities for advancing expertise in a particular field and for cross-training across legal sections.
