Michigan Grants Needed Tax Relief to Victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma

September 22, 2017

The Michigan Department of Treasury has announced that it will join taxing authorities across the country by allowing taxpayers affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma an extension of time in which to file state tax returns for 2016. These extended deadlines will be the same as the extended deadlines provided by the Internal Revenue Service (generally January 31, 2018 for businesses and individuals with valid extensions to September 15 or October 16, 2017), and the relief afforded also includes a waiver of penalties and interest. Taxpayers who expect to require disaster relief are advised to call or write to the Michigan Department of Treasury to request additional time to file.

In addition to hurricane relief accommodations, the Michigan Department of Treasury is also extending disaster relief to Michigan taxpayers affected by the June 22-23, 2017 storms and flooding in Bay, Gladwin, Isabella, and Midland counties. Taxpayers in need of extensions of time to file tax returns as a result of these events should call or write to the Michigan Department of Treasury.
