Varnum Tax Attorneys Featured in ICLE Webinar

January 16, 2017

The Institute for Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) recently released a webcast moderated by Varnum senior tax attorney Eric Nemeth and featuring Varnum tax attorney Katie Wilbur, as well as Tom Hillegonds of McShane & Bowie.

“Tax Research Concepts, Resources and Tools” is a 47-minute webcast designed to help tax practitioners efficiently navigate free and paid search tools in order to deliver the best results to clients. The video provides “real world tax research hypotheticals on LLC formation, employee classification, and uncapping issues.”

The webcast is available on demand on the ICLE website. Among other things, the session provides information on how to:

  • Distinguish binding precedent sources from persuasive authority sources
  • Determine the tax implications of an LLC formation
  • Search using paid sources like RIA Checkpoint
  • Find answers using free, reliable online sources
  • Employ Google searches effectively

Wilbur, who serves on the governing board of the State Bar of Michigan’s Taxation Section, said she enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the educational seminar.

“I am very appreciative of the mentors who have helped me in my career, and this was an opportunity to give something back to the legal community,” Wilbur said. “It was actually kind of fun.”

ICLE is a leading provider of how-to solutions, working with Michigan’s leading practitioners to develop time-saving and trustworthy tools and resources for the legal profession.

Nemeth is a partner at Varnum and leads the firm’s tax group. He concentrates his practice on tax and financial controversy (IRS and various states) including examinations, appellate conferences, criminal investigations, witness representation and civil and criminal tax litigation.

Wilbur is an associate in Varnum’s tax group, focusing on federal income tax matters for both foreign and domestic clients and issues pertaining to employee benefits and executive compensation. She currently serves on the Council of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan and is chair of the Young Lawyers Committee for that section.
