Huge Battery to be Refurbished

March 16, 2011

The Ludington Pumped Storage Plant consists of a 27 billion gallon reservoir with 1,872 MW of generating capacity from hydroelectric turbines. The water in the reservoir is released during the day to turn the turbines and produce electricity. Pumps are used at night to refill the reservoir when electric demand is low. Co-owners Consumers Energy and Detroit Edison have announced an $800 million ten-year project to refurbish and upgrade the capacity of the facility to 2,172 MW. Similar projects in Norway provide a “green battery” option in Europe.
