    The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert has been shut down due to a water leakage issue in the Safety Injection Refueling Water Tank. The leak was estimated to be 34 gallons per day, with 79 gallons of slightly radioactive water having drained into Lake Michigan.

  • Coal Plants Sued for Pollution Exceedances

    March 21, 2013

    On March 12 the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court against DTE Energy Company alleging violations of the federal Clean Air Act. The complaint cited 1499 instances between January 1, 2007 and June 30, 2012 in which the coal-fired plants of Belle River, River Rouge, St. Clair and Trenton Channel exceeded permitted opacity limits.

  • Another Baseload Natural Gas Plant for Consumers Energy

    January 30, 2013

    Consumers Energy has announced plans for a 700 MW natural gas-fired baseload power plant in Genesee County. To be located about 20 miles northeast of Flint (Thetford Township), construction on the combined cycle plant would start in 2015 and be completed in 2017.

  • U.P. Power Plant to be Kept Open

    January 21, 2013

    Wolverine Power Cooperative of Cadillac has agreed to co-partner on the retrofit of We Energies’ coal-fired power plant in Marquette. The cost to bring the Presque Isle Power Plant up to new federal environmental standards is estimated to be between $130 and $140 Million.

  • City of Holland Selects Natural Gas Option for Generation

    January 8, 2013

    The Holland Board of Public Works has approved a 114 MW natural gas fired electric generating facility to replace its seventy year old 65 MW coal-fired power plant. This decision effectively abandons the coal-fired generating option for which an air use permit was obtained in June of 2012.

  • Sierra Club Ready to Sue on Alleged Air Quality Violations

    As required under the federal Clean Air Act, the Sierra Club  has filed a “notice of intent to sue” alleging at least 1330 air quality violations by DTE Energy coal-fired power plants.
