Michigan’s Coastal Management Program Finds New Home at the Office of the Great Lakes

Michigan’s Coastal Management Program (MCMP) was transferred on July 26, 2010 from the Department of Environmental Quality’s Land and Water Management Division to the Office of the Great Lakes. Because this constitutes a change to Michigan’s approved Coastal Management Program, the MCMP submitted a routine program change notice seeking concurrence from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management.

The MCMP promotes wise management of the cultural and natural resources of Michigan’s coastal areas through regulatory programs, technical assistance, and local pass-through grants. Movement of the MCMP to the Office of the Great Lakes suggests an increased focus on the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of Michigan’s Great Lakes coastal resources.
