Supreme Court Case United States v. Arizona is Critical to Agriculture
May 31, 2012Farmers and farm advocacy groups are awaiting the scheduled late June decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Arizona because the decision will significantly impact the national agricultural economy. The case focuses on the constitutionality of Arizona's SB 1070 immigration law, and its outcome will impact whether a state has the authority to enact its own immigration enforcement laws rather than being limited to federal regulations. With similar state laws in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Utah, this case is critical to farm owners and workers as the state immigration laws have significantly hindered farming operations nationwide. As a result, nearly 300 organizations, including many farm and migrant worker organizations, have joined the challenge of Arizona's immigration law.

MSU Releases Impact Study of Michigan’s Food & Ag Sector
May 24, 2012The food and agriculture industry contributes about $91.4 billion to Michigan's economy according to an updated Michigan State University (MSU) study. That's an increase of more than 50 percent between 2004 and 2010. This sector also accounts for more than 923,000 jobs both directly, indirectly and through induced activity.
