International Alliance of Law Firms

Clients facing challenges or opportunities in global markets count on us to connect them with local representation in foreign jurisdictions that will provide the high quality service and responsiveness they experience with Varnum. Through our membership in the International Alliance of Law Firms, a prestigious network of business-oriented law firms, our clients have access to swift and effective legal advice in 41 countries.

Varnum attorneys attend regular global and regional Alliance meetings in person so that we get to know attorneys from other Alliance firms. These personal relationships enable us to recommend Alliance firms as attorneys we know and trust. The Alliance's commitment to excellent client service means we are often able to arrange local counsel and provide answers to international legal questions within 24 hours.

Alliance member firms have assisted Varnum clients with such matters as an acquisition in New Zealand, the tax effect of equity incentives in India and Korea, and documenting a loan to a multinational company with assets in Italy.

International work can be coordinated by Varnum or a client can work directly with an Alliance member firm, whichever best fits that client’s situation.

Varnum LLP is the only Michigan firm invited to join the International Alliance of Law Firms. The process of becoming a member is highly selective; candidates undergo a detailed selection procedure, including interviews and an on-site visit. Specific areas firms are rated on include:

  • Professional Excellence
  • The highest standard of ethics
  • Timeliness
  • Service strength
  • Practical solutions
  • Knowledge of local business culture

Quality evaluations are on-going to ensure that client satisfaction remains high. In addition, Alliance members share best practices in the areas of technology, process improvement and client service.

Globally, the Alliance has 63 member firms in 41 countries. For more information about the Alliance, visit
